The Sociology of Shandong University was one of the first approved sociological majors established by the Ministry of Education after the restoration of sociology in China. It was established in 1983 and officially enrolled the first undergraduate in the autumn of 1986. In 1994 it began to recruit sociology master degree and in 2010 was approved to be the first level discipline in master degree, in 2016 approved to be the first level discipline in doctoral degree. It is the key discipline which was one of the disciplines to be developed in "11th Five-Year" and "12th Five-Year" of Shandong province. During the past thirty years, sociology department has made great progress in teaching construction and academic research, and stands out in social application value and broad prospects for development.
The Sociology Department, with abundant teaching staff, has made remarkable progress in the fields of social development research, sociological theory, rural sociology, community and urban, and demography. Professional education pays attention to increase the students’ basic knowledge and skills, attaches great importance to the development of students' practical ability and advocates serving society with what has been learned. Undergraduates majoring in sociology are enrolled in major categories and specialized in the second academic year.
